The design mirrors a 17th-century letterpress dictionary because authentic constraints (aged parchment, natural pigments, letterpress ink) produce more honest aesthetics than arbitrary digital choices.

The Agoge was the rigorous Spartan education system — a multi-year training that built capacity through progressive challenge. Your vocabulary training follows the same principle: small, consistent exposure that compounds over time. The Phalanx (the Spartan military formation of 300 soldiers) becomes your progression system: complete one cohort of 300 words, advance to the next. Not gamification — a framework that respects the scale of real mastery.

• Self-Reported Awareness: After encountering each word, classify it: A (integrated — you use this naturally), B (developing — you understand but don't yet use it), or C (novice — brand new to you). The app tracks your progress and advances words based on test performance.
• Monday: One new word (C-tier focus)
• Tuesday: Monday's word + one developing word (B-tier)
• Wednesday–Sunday: All three words visible for review (including one support word, A-tier)
• Weekly test: Write a paragraph using all three words. Claude grades each word's usage (1-5 stars) and provides editorial feedback.
